The Harvest Begins

If you love to garden, this is the time one waits for. The harvest. Only my harvest has come quite late this year and because of that, I have been on the receiving end of some others harvest. Kindly people keep blessing me with tomatoes because, as of August 31st, my tomatoes were still green and hard. I made my first batch of fresh salsa from the garden of others. Only the peppers were mine. It was delish but somehow I just didn't have the same satisfaction one has from working with your own "fruit of your labors." But, slowly and surely, my tomatoes are beginning to ripen and for the past three days, I have enjoyed the hunt for the ready one. With the delivery of another batch of friendly tomato givers and my own harvest beginning, my kitchen is looking a little tomatoey. And I love it.

...from my garden

...the others

....still needing a bit of sun.

Today, I will have the privelage of picking the largest of my tomatoes. I have been watching it closely, waiting for just the right moment. I am pretty sure it is today. I think I may even bake my own bread to celebrate the occassion. That is what this tomato deserves...fresh bread to match it's thick slices, lightly salted, heavily peppered, real mayonaised delight. My first tomato sandwich. Can't wait.

And on the more humorous side...may I introduce the nature made, happy, male tomato (sorry, I just couldn't resist.)

Sometimes you just need a good laugh!

Note to self (as I love to borrow from my sister-in-love): the tomatoes must be taken care of today.

Oooooohhhh...that is hilarious! You gotta wonder, right?

And tomatoes? I mean, really. They are the whole reason. They are the fulfillment of the gardening experience. They are a reason to get up in the morning and to go on with life. They are the first and the last - gardenwise: the beginning and the end. :)
